Welcome to the UX Pioneers 'suggest a pioneer' wiki.

The purpose of this wiki is to allow everyone to recommend that I interview people that they feel are, or who have been, influential in the field of Human Computer Interaction.

To recommend a pioneer:

Click the Pioneer Lists link (here or in left nav)
click the 'easy edit' button (you might have to create a free wetpaint account in order to do so).
add the name of the suggested pioneer to this page, or, better yet, add more than just a name:
- Go to the Influence Stories page and add some reasons why you think this person is a pioneer
- add personal information about how this person influenced you
- email me if you have contact information or can facilitate an introduction (don't put contact info on this site -- I don't want to intrude on privacy).
You can even create a new page for the pioneer if you like!

Ingrid's work with commercializing usability in Scandinavia is unparalleled. Since the early 90's she has dominated the Swedish usability scene. Five years ago she co-founded what is now Scandinavia's largest Usability/Interaction design firm - inUse.

inUse has been very successful, not least thanks to the "Effect management" design strategy model, which she has helped to develop. Last year she also received the STIMDI great award as an acknowledgement of her efforts.

To me she is an inspiration, both because of her intellectual capabilities, and for her relentless struggle to help companies to steer their IT-investments towards the desired business effects.

How Jakob Nielsen influenced your user experience-related career.

Keith Instone. Jakob always seemed to be working in the same space at the same time. And he was very accessible. Hypertext research - used his Hypertext books as textbooks in classes I was teaching. Getting feedback from him on our HyperHolmes research project. The Web came along and we were showing up at CHI workshops together. Applying HCI to the web (before it was cool). And so on. Jakob has influenced a lot of people in a lot of ways, but for me it was thru a thousand emails on specific, tiny projects that I was doing that has the biggest impact on me personally.

About how Ben Shneiderman influenced your user experience-related career.

Keith Instone - My first official course in this area was the Summer School for User Interfaces, Finland, 1989. Ben was one of the main speakers. Initially Ben got me excited about user experience with the "learn by doing lots of empirical studies of usage" focus. But over time, it has been his big picture pushes that have influenced me. Social posters at CHI. Universal usability. Most recently, fixing computer science.
